Between Heaven and War at museum Catherijneconvent
Dear HHP students,
Join on March 23 at Museum Catharijneconvent to admire the finest modernist works from the interwar period!
Through the groundbreaking art of Wassily Kandinsky, Charley Toorop, Max Beckmann, and others, you will discover how artists in the 1920s and 1930s sought innovation and meaning—a quest that forever changed modern art. These impressive works of art tell the story of a world that had to reinvent itself. A story in which religion and spirituality play a surprising central role, with undeniable parallels to our own time.
Let yourself be transported to the turbulent period between two world wars, a crucial breeding ground for modern art. Between Heaven and War: Art and Religion in the Interwar Period brings together the highlights of European avant-garde art from 1918 to 1939 in a vibrant exhibition that moves and inspires.
For this exhibition, Museum Catharijneconvent brings together major figures from Dutch, Belgian, and German modernism. Many of these works will meet for the first time, drawn from collections of institutions such as Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Boijmans Van Beuningen, Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Phoebus Foundation Antwerp, Van Abbemuseum, and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Additionally, Between Heaven and War showcases top pieces from Museum Catharijneconvent’s own modernist collection as well as private collections.
The exposition is suitable for both Dutch and non-Dutch speakers. If you’re interested, sign up via this link:

In collaboration with the 100th anniversary of De Gemeenschap
This January marks exactly 100 years since the first issue of De Gemeenschap was published in Utrecht—an innovative Catholic art magazine that played a surprisingly significant role in the renewal of Dutch modern art from 1925 onward. To commemorate this anniversary, we are joining forces with seven cultural organizations. Over the coming months, we will host various exhibitions and activities celebrating the leading artists and authors associated with the magazine and its publishing house.
Best regards,
Olivier Bellaart
